Ready, a national public service campaign, advises citizens do the following to prepare for a hurricane:
  • Know your area's risk of hurricanes and sign up for community warning alerts.
  • Develop a plan in the event of an evacuation.
  • Locate a safe shelter.
  • Stock an emergency preparedness kit, including water and food for at least three days, medications, a flashlight, batteries, cash and first aid supplies.
  • Review insurance policies and make sure important documents are in a safe place.

The Associated Press shows the progression of a hurricane from a Category 1 to a Category 4.
